Position Summary:

This is a unique opportunity to join a talented team of scientists at the frontiers of innovation in next-gen sequencing. As a Manager of Scientific Research at Illumina you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment, creating novel molecular biology tools for the preparation of samples for analysis on Illumina platforms. You will collaborate with key external and internal partners to develop new applications. Through integration of molecular biology, sequencing chemistry and hardware components, you will participate in the development of high quality, robust new products for both cutting edge research and the clinic. This position will require working as a part of a multidisciplinary team developing state-of- the-art technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead cross functional product development projects

  • Manage goals, budgets and resources within defined target timeframes and make decisions regarding the goals and progress of project / functional teams

  • Lead a tactical team to build robust products in sample preparation for next generation sequencing

  • Create and execute protocols for RUO and IVD product development and make  decisions todrive ongoing team improvements in   experimental execution from start to finish

  • Present results and provide assessments to Senior Management to enable them to make informed business decisions

  • Identify creative solutions to challenges and actively participate in improving assay methods

  • Perform equally well as a collaborative team leader and proactive functional manager, while functioning as a strong scientific individual contributor depending on project needs; be highly adaptive to changing project scopes and responsibilities

  • Message vision and team priority shifts to Executive Management

Requirements:

  • Highly motivated individual with the proven ability to think creatively toward solving technical problems effectively and efficiently

  • Ability to translate corporate goals into executable R&D plans while understanding technical risks, mitigations and alternatives

  • Proven record of transferring new products to manufacturing and/or QC in a fast-paced biotech environment under design control. Extensive experience in structured Design of Experiments (DOE) and Critical Parameter Management highly desired

  • Demonstrated ability to work with cross-disciplinary teams to optimize assay conditions and manufacturing/QC processes to achieve commercial levels of stability, robustness, and performance.

  • Proven data analysis and statistical interpretation skills of large complex genomics data sets desired

  • Proven people management skills, with strengths in encouraging high levels of growth and performance of direct reports.

  • Able to work effectively under pressure to meet scheduled deadlines and handle multiple activities simultaneously

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required to clearly explain complex issues, progress reports and technical roadmaps to a variety of audiences across different functions and levels.

  • Deep understanding of ILMN’s library prep portfolio

Desirable, but not required:

  • Strong background in NGS technology and data analysis tools highly desirable

  • Expertise in bioinformatic approaches to analysis of large data sets desirable

  • Have a good working knowledge of IVD product requirements

Experience/Education:

  • BSc/MS: 9 - 12+ years of experience or PhD: 3 - 6+ years of experience; Education in Genomics, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry with experience in biological assay development in an academic or industrial laboratory; or equivalent work and educational experience preferred.

  • 2+ years’ experience leading cross functional product development programs for genomics solutions and or medical devices

  • 2+ years’ experience developing, mentoring and leading high performing scientists and research associates in a functional management role

  • Uses interpersonal skills to influence customers, suppliers and other comparable level managers.

  • Typically has 7+ years of direct work experience, with 1-3 years of Management experience
